New York Fashion Week Hot List: Spring 2012

WHAT'S NEW?! That’s the question on everyone’s lips every time Fashion Week rolls around, and we’ve got plenty of up-to-the-minute events on our radar, from a top model’s tasty new pop-up restaurant to a will-they-or-won’t-they hip-hop fashion collaboration. Plus, we’ve rounded up the most promising models, up-and-coming designers, and must-hear music moments from the upcoming shows.

The Marc Jacobs Closer

Sept 15: There's nothing like a grand finale, and that's what we'll be getting this season. Marc Jacobs had to push back his show from Monday to Thursday when Hurricane Irene delayed his team's preparations, which means he'll be closing out Fashion Week. It also means that the Marc anticipation that grips the fashion world twice yearly will have three more days to simmer.

The Mystery Team
TBD: Kanye West's fashion line and the Loch Ness Monster have one thing in common: we've heard more rumors than we can count about both. The Celine-loving half of the Throne is said to be working on a women's line with Harper's Bazaar Australia's Christine Centenera (who evidently shares his scarf-print fetish.) Further details are elusive, but if you do score an invite, make sure not to let 'Ye hear you mispronouncing "Dior Homme."

The Elettra Complex

Hunger pangs shouldn't be a problem for Fashion Week attendees this season, as none other than Elettra Wiedemann is opening a pop-up restaurant for the week. Called Goodness Badness, the startup promises healthy and unhealthy treats in equal measure. Follow them on Twitter for updates; Prabal Gurung is already a fan.

The Hostesses With the Mostest
Sept 6: Lisa Mayock and Sophie Buhai don't hew too close to the fashion norm. After all, the Vena Cava designers favor Gowanus over the Garment District, clogs instead of high heels, and they like to sell off their odds and ends in online garage sales. So it makes sense that they'd be doing something a little different for Spring 2012. The duo is hosting a dinner at MPD restaurant where they'll show their spring line on a range of muses, from Tennessee Thomas to Hailey Gates. Oh, and we hear Buhai and Mayock will be showing their debut collection of handbags, too.

The Grade-School Grail
Sept 7: For the tweed-loving tween in your life, Ralph Lauren will be holding a Girls' fashion show on Wednesday before fashion week. The fall collection will be on display to an audience of mothers and daughters, along with a holiday preview.

The Power Pop-Up
Sept 8: Nicola Formichetti's famous pal, Lady Gaga, may or may or may not be visiting Mugler's Tribeca pop-up shop, but her little monsters are sure to snap up the house's runway looks. The store will be open until September 21 at 57 Walker Street

The Milk Man
Sept 9: Another label that's making a play for the runway: Suno, the print-happy collection that's become a favorite of every girl whose favorite acronym is Roy G. Biv. Founder Max Osterweis and designer Erin Beatty will show at Milk Studios. Clear your Friday night.

The Beauty Queen

Sept 11: Dakota Fanning is an old hand at 18. The NYU freshman already starred in Marc Jacobs' Spring 2007 clothing ads, and is now the face of his Oh, Lola! perfume. The designer's Mercer Street boutique will fete the hot-pink juice's launch on Sunday, Sept. 11th, with Fanning herself on hand.

The Art Stars
Sept 9: It wouldn't be Fashion Week without a prestige art party. This season it's the Richard Hambleton opening at Phillips du Pury, hosted by Vladimir Restoin-Roitfeld and Andy Valmorbida and presented in collaboration with Giorgio Armani. Between Hambleton's sweeping large-scale canvases and the people-spotting, you won't know where to look.

The Big Man on Campus
Sept 10: Felipe Oliveira Baptista has his crocodile-logo polo cut out for him. From the moment we learned he'd be taking over at Lacoste, exactly a year ago, we were excited to see where he'd take the house's lineage: Margot Tenenbaum quirky? Andre 3000 wild? Or tennis-club classic? His spring show should provide some answers.

The Go-See Girls

Imagine booking a Prada campaign without having so much as set foot on a runway. That's what the Arizona-bred Kelly Mittendorf (bottom right) has done, and we're eager to see her make her show debut. Milly Simmonds is a redheaded Brit (top left) with a fresh-faced look that recalls Karen Elson. Then there's Dominican beauty Patricia Guerrero (top right) and Bulgarian Evelina Toteva, (bottom left), who's an avowed bookworm. More names to look out for in your programs: Bee Gee, Issa Lish, Krystal Glynn, Crystal Noreiga, Caterina Ravaglia, Vasilisa, and Liao.

The Watering Hole
Milk Studios has it all — well, except for convenient booze dispersal, that is. Luckily, a new bar in the basement of the Chelsea Market should serve those needs with both traditional cocktails and "'lushies" (the adult version of the 7-11 favorite.)

The Runway Newbie
Sept 13: Believe it or not, Tory Burch has never done a runway show. (Her blockbuster presentations have drawn the likes of Kanye and Aerin Lauder, though.) She'll break that record this season with her very own defilé at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall. Between this and her Madison Avenue flagship, which opens on September 8th, Burch has got a lot to check off the bucket list. Can skydiving be far behind?

The Man Magnet
Sept 12: Now that she's officially a runway model, can Leandra Medine really call herself a "man repeller"? The blogger will be walking in Rebecca Minkoff's show. Mia Moretti will be on hand to DJ.

The Freshman Class
Predicting the next Altuzarra or Wes Gordon is everyone's favorite fashion week pastime. Early birds will want to catch Jackie Fraser-Swan's line Emerson (far left) at 9am on Friday the 9th. Fraser-Swan artfully mixes everything from tie-dye to graphic prints (the name comes from her famous ancestor, Ralph Waldo.) Tawfik Mounayer launched Tribune Standard in February, and his feminine separates (near left) will be on view at Pier 59 on the 11th. Derek Lam alum Caron Callahan will show pieces inspired by everyone's favorite Lady of the Canyon, Joni Mitchell, while Fotini has elegant eveningwear on the menu

The True Brit
Sept 10: At 40, Mulberry hardly feels middle-aged. The brand is celebrating its four decades by hosting a tea at their flagship store, followed by a rooftop birthday bash at Skylight Studios on the 12th. Look out for Kasabian to play a live set at 10pm.

The Soundtrack
Want to gain entrance to a Fashion Week party? You might want to brush up on your guitar chops or your turntable skills. Among the musical talent on display this season: Ellie Goulding will be headlining Saks' Wear Now launch on Sept. 7, with Chelsea Leyland DJ'ing; indie band IUD will jam out like St. Vincent before them at Rachel Comey, and Leona Lewis will perform at the ARISE/Africa collective show.

The Way Uptown Boys
Sept 11: Marcus Samuelsson's Red Rooster restaurant has been drawing crowds to Harlem. Bono and his other half Ali Hewson will be among that number when they host Edun's after-party celebrating the launch of their Pioneers campaign. One tip: get your hands on the mac'n'greens before it's all gone.

The Camera Man

We knew Isaac Mizrahi had a passion for cinema (that Nanook of the North collection in '94 - still relevant! - but he's apparently a fan of other types of film too. Instead of a show this season, he'll be taking photos for a lookbook that will be sent around to editors and other industry types. We hope he'll find a way to work in some poodles, at the very least.

The Reading List
Given that this is Fashion Week, and nothing starts on time, you have two options: play hostage to your iPhone, or pick up a stylish read. Some options that are sure to attract Tommy Ton's lens: Penguin's gilt-edged reissues of F. Scott Fitzgerald classics like The Beautiful and the Damned, Elissa Schappell's short story collection Blueprints for Building Better Girls, with its eye-catching red cover, or Alina Simone's antic music memoir, You Must Go and Win.

The Fashion History Lesson (With Cocktails!)
Sept 16: The Eye Has To Travel is Lisa Immordino Vreeland's paean to the late fashion editor, who spent more than 25 years at BAZAAR. Barneys is hosting a book party; for more on Vreeland, read the feature from our September issue and then see a slideshow of her work for BAZAAR.

The Must-Have Accessory
All right, we're biased, but this beats out any bag, bauble or It shoe: Harper's BAZAAR Greatest Hits (Abrams) is available now. The book looks back on a decade of fabulous fashion, with stunning photography by Hiro, Peter Lindbergh, Jean-Paul Goude, and Sølve Sundsbø. Get a peek at some of the contents in our slideshow, and then pre-order the book here.
