Fuchsia Nails & Juicy Burgers
"I think we've seen neutrals and darks for a while now and people are wanting something fresh and fun," says manicurist Alicia Torello. "I also think the huge surge in popularity with nail art has a big influence on people taking more chances when it comes to color." If you're just starting out with bright nails, we suggest opting for a bright pink — it's punchy, but still within the classic color range, so you don't have to worry about your nails looking too intense or crazy.
Neon Gradient & Spicy Tacos
"I think we are going to be seeing a lot of the bright greens, almost neon kind of looks this spring," says Torello. If you don't want to go full-on neon, trying doing a gradient manicure in shades of greens and yellows — it tones down the in-your-face quality of neon green nails, softening up the look, but still keeping it trendy.
"It's best to use solid opaque colors," suggests Torello. "I'll start on the pinky with the lightest of the five colors and end on the thumb with the darkest. I also really like this technique with purples because you can get a good range of lights to darks. You can also pick one dark green polish and mix it with white to get a nice range of lighter greens."
Sprinkle Nail Art & Minty Ice Cream
What better way to top off a tasty frozen treat than with some peppy sprinkle nail art? "It's good to start with a nice bright base so all your dots really pop," says Torello. "You can get a dotting tool on Amazon or even use a toothpick to create the sprinkles. Start at the tip of the nail with your first color, add a few dots, then do the same with your next color. I try and start with just a few of each color I've chosen because you can always add more. When choosing the colors, try and pick bright, contrasting colors — oranges, bright greens, light or vibrant blues, and purples are always fun together."
Aqua Tips & Gooey Pizza
We're the first to admit that bright nail colors can be tricky to wear. The secret to making them look classy and not trashy is all in the shape and length of the nail. "I prefer a short nail when doing bright colors," says Torello. "I think when they are long and bright it becomes something else. A short, bright nail can be fun, but also chic. When shaping the nail I find following the natural shape of your nail is always a good guide. Be sure to use a base coat as bright polishes can stain your nails."
Bright Stripes & Hearty Sandwiches
Can't decide on just one color? Try using two or three bright shades as an accent color. For this look, Torello chose a dark electric purple for the base, then used a nail art brush to draw pink and blue stripes across the center of the nail. To make the lines as straight as possible, she suggests creating each in one quick, clean swipe — this will minimize any glopping or shakiness.
Glittery Citrus Nails & Slippery Noodles
Another cool way to wear brights is to pair it with a glittery topcoat in a similar hue. One of the things that can make neons look too retro is when they are ultra-shiny, so by adding texture, you modernize the look, without taking away from the vividness of the color
