Tips from a hair color expert on how to keep your blonde highlights from fading this summer.
Cover up
"As far as I'm concerned, hair color is art—so keep it covered when in direct sunlight! Try using floppy hats or something like an Hermès silk scarf,"advises White.
Use Sunscreen
"Just like your dermatologist says to use sunblock for your skin every day, I say use sunblock for your hair every day. I like the Kérastase Micro-Voile Protecteur for hair. It's not the least bit oily and it won't weigh down your locks like some other products."
Protect Against Pools and Oceans
"Keep hair out of chlorine and salt water. Imagine what would happen to your favorite dress if you dunked it in salt water or chlorine and laid it out in the sun. That's what you're doing to your highlights. The cuticle of the hair is like a sponge—if you go into a pool with dry hair, it'll absorb the chlorinated water. If you know that you'll be going into salt water or chlorine, slick your hair back with an oil that contains sun protection, like Phyto Plage. The oil will make the cuticle full so that it won't absorb as much chlorine. Then, be sure to rinse hair with fresh water when you get out of the ocean or pool."
Try Clarifying Shampoo
"If some chlorine does deposit on your hair and dull your blonde hue, you can remove it by using a clarifying shampoo, like UltraSwim, or an at-home option, like an apple cider vinegar rinse."
Use Dry Shampoo
"The second biggest cause fading highlights is frequent shampooing. Try cutting back on shampoo by using the Serge Normant Meta Revive Dry Shampoo. This dry shampoo not only helps you make it one more day without washing, it also builds volume and the fragrance is fantastic. You'll find that you can even use the product when you don't need to because it makes your hair smell so great. The scalp's natural oils are Mother Nature's deep conditioner, so cutting back on shampooing saves the health of your hair, keeps your blonde from fading, and you get an extra day out of your blowout—it's a win-win situation."
Try A Mask
"Healthy hair holds color longer, so I recommend doing a deep conditioning treatment once a week. I like Oribe's Masque For Beautiful Color because it strengthens damaged hair, smooths the cuticle, and has color-protecting UV filters. It also has bio-flavonoids, which protect color from fading and discoloration."
Take Vitamins
"Lastly, like everything else, healthy hair starts from the inside out. If you go to a supplement or health food store and ask for a hair, skin, and nail vitamin, they will point you to an aisle full of them. Biotin is the most popular, but different people prefer different vitamins. My personal favorite is a dietary supplement called Viviscal. It can be bought without a prescription from behind the counter at your local pharmacy, and it will make your hair thick and luscious, which in turn will keep your color vibrant longer.
"The main thing to remember with all of these tips is that they'll only work if they're done consistently," says White. "If you only cover your hair in the sun once in a while, or take a Phyto Vitamin once a week, you won't get the results you desire."
